Church of Santa Clara

This 1698 building has an octagonal central square and has currently been designated a Heritage of Cultural Interest. The church currently accommodates the Las Claras Convent Hotel Spa, although the church maintains its liturgical function.

The convent was founded in 1607, by Mr. Pedro Téllez Girón’s second wife, Mrs. Isabel de la Cueva. The Church, constructed 1690s has an octagonal central plan with an elliptical dome, covered in bright early 18th century plasterworks. A triumphal arch leads into the main chapel, a small room covered in small vaults.

The high choir is located at the foot of the chapel. Inside a great number of altarpieces decorate the main altar and the perimeter walls.

The façade consists of two sections: the lower section is decorated with a semicircular arch flanked by panelled pilasters, whilst the smaller, top section features a niche, finished with a pediment. A notable semicircular rises up from the Convent walls, covered by a small roof and flanked by the founders’ coats of arms.

Open in the summer season only on Sundays and public holidays before mass. Closed the rest of the year.
